Introduction to Talent Management Introductory Programme
Develop evidence-based talent management techniques to help implement a strategy that adds value to the organisation and employee experience.
The ability to identify and select the most effective methods by which to develop and retain talent is highly desirable for companies and people professionals. By managing talent based on evidence and data, organisations can build a high-performance workplace, foster a learning culture, add value to their employer brand, improve social mobility and increase diversity.
Talent management seeks to attract, identify, develop, engage, retain and deploy individuals who are considered particularly valuable. Talent management strategies should align with organisational goals and objectives and mitigate future capability risks. People professionals with talent management expertise look beyond boundaries to work with diverse talent pools and partner organisations.
This course will equip you with an introduction to talent management and how to maximise potential through talent identification, engagement and planning. It will help you to identify the optimum talent management approach in your context and how to implement it to achieve organisational goals.

Developed by subject matter experts Jane Daly and Kerry Forster, this programme is delivered in two parts and includes CIPD research on talent management in partnership with Omni:
- A self-directed e-learning course accessed via the CIPD Learning Hub (available for at least 12 months)
- A 45-60-minute live webcast, broadcast every quarter over 12 months (bookable once)
The e-learning course covers the entire programme content, so you are not required to attend the live webcast in order to gain a good understanding of the topic. However, the live webcast is used to deliver the most up-to-date information on the topic, highlighting recent relevant CIPD work, answering some learner provided questions and speaking about the topic in a personable, relatable way.
There is a short informal knowledge check at the end of the course for the learners to test themselves against some of the key messages. This can be undertaken multiple times.
- Topic 1: What is talent management?
- Topic 2: What are the key benefits of talent management?
- Topic 3: The key principles of a successful talent management strategy
- Topic 4: Driving the talent management cycle
- Topic 5: Evidence-based talent management
